The Black Candle is a landmark, vibrant documentary that uses Kwanzaa as a vehicle to explore and celebrate the African-American Experience.

Narrated by world renowned poet Maya Angelou and directed by award-winning author and filmmaker M.K. Asante, Jr., The Black Candle is an extraordinary, inspirational story about the struggle and triumph of African-American family, community, and culture.

Filmed across the United States, Africa, Europe and the Caribbean, The Black Candle is a timely illumination on why the seven principles of Kwanzaa (unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith) are so important to African-Americans today.

The first feature film on Kwanzaa, The Black Candle traces the holiday’s growth out of the Black Power Movement in the 1960s to its present-day reality as a global, pan-African holiday embraced by over 40 million celebrants.

BALLAST IN THEATERS TODAY

It takes a while to figure out what’s going on in BALLAST, Lance Hammer’s directorial debut, which won best Filmmaker and best Cinematography prizes at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

An example of Pure Cinema, Ballast is less interested in telling a story than conveying a feeling.   Capturing moments an moods in poetic fashion.  Of what it’s like to discover your twin brother dead of suicide.  The loneliness and pain of not knowing your father.  The desperation and pain of losing your job after being physically beaten.

Shot in the sparse farmland of the Mississippi Delta in saturated shades of blue and deep blacks with a cast of non-professional actors, BALLAST has a way of pulling you in.  Reminiscent of such classics as NOTHING BUT A MAN (1964) and GEORGE WASHINGTON (1998) Ballast is not designed for everyone’s taste.

Ballast, is, at its core,  a meditation on pain.  As in life, if you’re patient and provide acceptance, you will find reward (and healing) in this very special film.

BALLAST opens today at The Ritz at The Bourse, 4th Street Between Market and Chestnut Streets in Old City and is Not Rated (Drug use and Violence).

John Legend World Cafe Live Radio Brodacast 11/7

November 7, 2008
John Legend at World Cafe Live

John Legend joins us for a Free At Noon Show on November 7 from World Cafe Live. A co-production of WXPN and NPR Music. The show is sold-out but you can listen live online or on 88.5 FM WXPN Radio in Philly.

John Legend Soul singer John Legend is a five-time Grammy winner of sultry and sophisticated R&B style. His albums, full of easy vocals and piano-based hip-hop instrumentation, are also great collaborative efforts. Legend began playing the piano at the age of three and by the time he was 7-years-old, he was fully immersed in traditional gospel singing with his church. Though he was also classically trained on the piano, most of his current work draws heavily from the gospel R&B traditions he grew up with. After attending the University of Pennsylvania, Legend used his experience as an a cappella musical director and his distinct sensual and refined sound to wow audiences in nightclubs.

His smooth, heartfelt style won over many established musicians and soon enough he was working with notables such as Lauryn Hill. The release of his debut album Get Lifted in 2004 was a remarkable multi-platinum success for the up-and-coming artist. In addition to his stream of successful top charters, he became quite politically active. In 2007, he launched the Show Me Campaign (based on his hopeful song “Show Me”), to fight poverty and help lower-income communities. In addition to such philanthropic efforts, he has played a big role in the current democratic political campaign by holding speeches as well as performances.

Legend’s latest album since 2006, Evolver, features OutKast’s Andre 3000, emerging hip-hop/soul artist Estelle and established musical superstar Kanye West. November 19 marks the start of Legend’s worldwide tour to promote the album.
