NOTORIOUS on the B.I.G. Screen

NOTORIOUS IN THEATERS

NOTORIOUS, the highly anticipated musical biopic of slain rapper Christopher Wallace (Notorious B.I.G.) opens today.

While everybody who lived through the era will have their own expectations for the film, and particularly the casting, the film has a solid, if by the numbers script by Cheo Hodari Coker and Reggie Rock Bythewood and and anchoring performance by Angela Bassett as Biggie’s mom.

While people will be bickering over how well the actors playing Lil Kim, Puffy, Faith and Tupac come off in relation to their reallife counterparts, newcomer Jamal Woolard does an exceptional job as B.I.G.  You can see him match up to whomever he’s on screen with.  He delivers a solid performance.  Let’s hope he getsmore chances to shine.

If you’re looking for a ride that will take you back to those early 90s rap ciphers and concerts, this is the movie for you.  If you’re looking for an exploration of the life of a talented artist that literally changed the rap game while fighting his own personal demons and flaws, Notorious misses the the chance to really deliver n an emotional level.
