Our Next Event - AFTER AUTUMN 5/21

Soul Food Cinema celebrates the DVD release of AFTER AUTUMN, the sophomore feature written & directed by Southwest Philly’s JAMAL HILL. (Note: Mr. Hill will not be in attendance, but other reps from Philavision will be available for a post film discussion)

What would you do if the woman you fell in love with simultaneously fell in lust with your best friend, who couldn’t care less about her? How far would you go to prove your love to her? These are some of the questions DERRICK PARKS (Lil Zane Copeland) must answer when he meets the beautiful AUTUMN SUMMERS (Sundy Carter) in this light hearted tale of love at first sight. Set on the back drop of the historical city of Philadelphia during the beautiful city of Autumn.

Mr. Hill will be on hand after the screening to participate in a post-movie discussion and sign copies of the DVD, which will be available for sale at the event.  He’s been doing big things since the debut of his first feature film, MONEY, POWER AND RESPECT (2006).  Megastar Will Smith was introduced to the burgeoning talent and instantly took him under his wing.  In addition to preparing his next feature, STREETS (produced by Charlie Mack), he has worked on the big-budget features I AM LEGEND, IRON MAN and HANCOCK.  Reelblack is proud to close its seventh season with this special screening of work by homegrown talent.  Please arrive early as seating is limited.

My good brother Dennis Darrell, an exceptional film promoter and even greater human being based in Charlotte passed recently.  We started our showcases around the same time and spent a lot of time exchanging info on quality films and filmmakers.  He was one of the best at putting together events.  His passion, creativity and insight will be missed.

Queen Latifah and Common’s  romantic comedy JUST WRIGHT, opened in fourth place this weekend with a gross of 8.5 million on 1800 screens. It was bested by Iron Man 2, Robin Hood and Letters to Juliet.  Scripted by Philly native Michael Elliott (Brown Sugar, Like Mike), this breezy film about a New Jersey nurse looking for love is plenty of fun and features a strong supporting cast that includes Pam Grier, Paula Patton and Phylicia Rashad.  Director Sanaa Hamri (Something New) keeps this modern-day fairy tale going at a steady pace.  One downside is that the sneak previews give the entire movie away.  On the plus side, Common proves himself to be a very capable Prince Charming.

With the exception of Overbrook’s Karate Kid, which hits theaters June 11, this release essentially signals the end of “Black Movie Season,” as modestly budgeted fare makes way for the Big Budgeted Summer blockbusters until late Summer/Fall.

Visit our website Friday for info on how to win a Just wright Mini poster signed by Common.  Check out our exclusive interview with the talented musician/actor on Reelblack TV:
