Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache - The Intouchables Interview

Filmmakers Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache recently visited Philadelphia, where they met up with Reelblack TV to discuss their award winning film, THE INTOUCHABLES. One of the most entertaining films of the year, it still can’t escape comparison to the “Magical Negro” subgenre of American film that was popularized by movies like The Green Mile and The Legend of Bagger Vance several years ago. What starts off as a generally lighthearted interview evolves into a thoughtful discussion on race, political correctness and artistic intention. A Reelblack Exclusive. The Intouchables opens in Philly on June 1.

An irreverent, uplifting comedy about friendship, trust and human possibility, The Intouchables has broken box office records in its native France and across Europe. Based on a true story of friendship between a handicap millionaire (Francois Cluzet) and his street smart ex-con caretaker (Omar Sy), The Intouchables depicts an unlikely camaraderie rooted in honesty and humor between two individuals who, on the surface, would seem to have nothing in common.

Win A Pair of Tickets To See CHANGING THE GAME on 5/24

THIS CONTEST HAS ENDED.  THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO ENTERED.

A private donor is making it possible for Reelblack to give away 8 pairs of tickets to see Rel Dowdell’s CHANGING THE GAME this Thursday night at 7:20pm at the AMC Loews Cherry Hill with filmmaker Rel Dowdell in attendance.

“Changing the Game” was shot in Philadelphia and stars veteran actors Tony Todd (Candyman, 24 and The Event); Irma P. Hall (Soul Food, The Lady Killers and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil); and rapper/actor Kirk “Sticky Fingaz” Jones (Blade: The Series, Law & Order, and NCIA: LA and The Shield).

The story: Surviving the Wall Street game will take everything Darrell Barnes learned from his dangerous upbringing as he encounters a new set of obstacles and villains. Barnes is a brilliant young man who rises from the slums of North Philadelphia to the skyscrapers of New York’s financial district, where the stakes are high with global impacts.  Is the key to survival an almost-mystical gift from a slain childhood friend?  Dowdell’s expert directing, the cast’s impactful performances and a few Hitchcockian plot points ensure that the film will answer that question and more - on its own terms.

This week may be your last chance to see CHANGING THE GAME on the big screen.  Enter to win by sending an email with your FULL NAME IN THE BODY OF THE MESSAGE and the PHRASE “CHANGING THE GAME CONTEST” to contests@reelblack.com

Winners will be announced on Wednesday afternoon.  Special Thanks to “Disco Joe” Randolph for his generous donation.

ABOUT THE MOVIE

Surviving the Wall Street game will take everything Darrell Barnes learned from his dangerous upbringing as he encounters a new set of obstacles and villains. Barnes is a brilliant young man who rises from the slums of North Philadelphia to the skyscrapers of New York’s financial district, where the stakes are high with global impacts.  Is the key to survival an almost-mystical gift from a slain childhood friend?  Dowdell’s expert directing, the cast’s impactful performances and a few Hitchcockian plot points ensure that the film will answer that question and more – on its own terms.

“This is a story with complex characters in a changing world reaching an audience with diverse backgrounds. My hope is for ‘Changing the Game’ to embody its title, by transforming the way African-American films and filmmakers are perceived,” says Dowdell.

PLEDGE YOUR SUPPORT

We need at least 50 people to attend the matinee and luncheon in order for it to be a success. Please forward this email to everyone you know. Let’s show Rel some love and demonstrate our support for “Good Movies ’bout Black Folks.”

Please Register and RSVP at www.meetup.com/reelblack so we can anticipate the number of guests.

If it does well here, CHANGING THE GAME will expand to other cities and perhaps it will be easier for quality African-American Film to find distribution. For Rel, this has been a dream that has taken more than 7 years to materialize. I urge you to commit a few hours to make your presence heard. Now is the time. RSVP for this event and bring a friend.

Reelblack Presents Leaked Night at the Five Spot DVD Release Celebration (5/8)

REELBLACK CELEBRATES THE 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE CLASSIC JAZZYFATNASTEES DOCUMENTARY WITH A SPECIAL SCREENING AND DVD RELEASE OF RARE MUSIC AND PERFORMANCE FILMS FROM THEIR VAULTS.

WHAT: Reelblack Presents Leaked Night at the Five Spot DVD Release Celebration
WHEN: Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at 7pm
WHERE: International House, 3701 Chestnut Street in Philadelphia
COST: Admission is $9.00 adults/ $7.00 students and seniors.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — To celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the original broadcast of the Philadelphia music film JAZZYFATNASTEES: IN PROCESS, Reelblack Presents will host a special screening of the now classic documentary, along with LEAKED NIGHT AT THE FIVE SPOT, a selection of rare and never-before-seen music films and performance clips by Black Lily artists culled from the Reelblack/Captured Soul vaults.

The one night only event, hosted by WURD-AM’s Stephanie Renee, will take place at International House, 3701 Chestnut Street in University City on Tuesday May 8, 2012 at 7pm. Admission is $9.00 Adults/ $7.00 Students and Seniors. Reelblack Season 9, Scribe Video Center and International House members will be admitted free of charge. Jazzzyfatnastees, Kindred The Family Soul and other Black Lily All-Stars will be in attendance.
The screening will also serve as the release party for the LEAKED NIGHT AT THE FIVE SPOT DVD, which includes over 50 minutes of bonus performances captured live at the Black Lily Women In Music Showcase from 1999-2005. The Black Lily was a weekly live music event founded by Jazzyfatnastees that took place at the now demolished Five Spot nightclub in Old City. It served as the launching pad for such artists as Floetry, Jazmine Sullivan, Jaguar Wright, Lady Alma, Aaries and Kindred The Family Soul, who are all featured on the LEAKED NIGHT DVD. The DVD will be sold for $15.00 at the show and online at www.reelblack.com. Proceeds from the night will go towards the completion of the long-awaited concert film LAST NIGHT AT THE FIVE SPOT, which is an all-star concert film featuring artists who made their name at The Black Lily.
JAZZYFATNASTEES: IN PROCESS (2002/DVD/20 minutes/ dir. Michael Dennis) was originally broadcast in June 2002 on WYBE-TV’s Philadelphia Stories. It came about as a result of filmmakers Mike D. and Daryl DeBrest’s near-religious visits to the Tuesday night jam sessions. “Each week we came to see something new, hear something new, feel something new and sometimes something old in a new way, “ recalls DeBrest. The film created the opportunity to do more music documentaries on Jazmine Sullivan, Kindred The Family Soul and Lady Alma, all of which will be seen on Tuesday night.
The live performance clips were selected to capture the excitement of the Lily circa 2002 and were culled from the original masters from over 40 hours of video and audio material. “People have been asking us for years to make this footage available,” explains Mike . “ We have occasionally posted clips to YouTube, but the 10th anniversary gives us the opportunity to share almost an hour of material that has never been seen by the general public. It’s going to be awesome seeing this on the big screen with IHouse’s amazing projection and sound.”

Event sponsored by International House, Rolling Out Weekly, Philly360.com, Philadelphia Sun, WURD 900 AM, L.A. Farmbry and associates.  Promo Partners: 215mag.com, Scribe Video Center, Flygirrl, and Artists First.
