Now in her late 80s, Broadway legend Elaine Stritch remains as ferociously funny as ever. In this bold, hilarious and poignant portrait, the uncompromising Tony and Emmy Award-winner is revealed both on and off stage. Candid reflections about her life are punctuated with words from friends (including James Gandolfini, Tina Fey, John Turturro, Hal Prince, George C. Wolfe, Nathan Lane and Cherry Jones) and archival footage that showcases some of the great moments from her career. Whether dominating the stage, tormenting Alec Baldwin on the set of 30 Rock, or sharing her struggles with aging, diabetes and alcoholism, Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me reaches beyond the icon’s brassy exterior and reveals an inspiring portrait of a complex woman and artist.

Movie Meetup - REPENTANCE 3/1 in S. Philly

It is important to support quality African-American film in theaters–not on bootleg.  Join us as we organize a group to see REPENTANCE, the new thriller from Codeblack starring Forest Whitaker, Anthony Mackie and Sanaal Lathan on Saturday March 1 at 1pm at the UA Riverview, Columbus Blvd. and Reed Streets.  Discussion and giveaways afterward at the Ruby Buffet down the street.  Event is Dutch Treat.  Movie is $10.00  Buffet dinner approximately $15.00.

From Lionsgate and Codeblack Films. Years after a drunken car crash that almost took his life, Tommy Carter (Anthony Mackie) has reinvented himself as a therapist/spiritual advisor who advocates a synthesis of world religions and positivity. He’s parlayed this vocation into a successful book release that one day draws the attention of Angel Sanchez (Forest Whitaker), a profoundly troubled man fixated on the “untimely” death of his mother. When Carter takes on Sanchez as a personal client in an effort to raise funds for his indebted brother Ben (Mike Epps), things quickly take a turn for the worse. Angel needs much more than a simple life coach. What may be simple to grasp for some is the idea that single actions in the past comprise tidal waves of reactions in the present. Director Philippe Caland’s REPENTANCE examines these issues against a backdrop of kidnapping and murder.

The Place: Langston, Oklahoma
The time: 1890

Deadwood Dick, Isom Dart, Ben Hodges and Jim Beckwourth meet up in the saloon owned by the gun toting stagecoach Mary.

A tense card game leads men to reveal his hand – a bounty on their heads. a silent pact is made – the last man standing takes the prize, $80,000.
Who will play their last hand and who will live to fight another day when the dust settles from the shoot out of the saloon?

The story may be fictional but the characters are real. Langston Oklahoma is a real place and was the first of many frontier towns that were populated by African-Americans. While Hollywood may tell us the cowboys were blonde haired and blue eyed there were many who were black, mostly freed or escaped slaves from the south.
Nat Love aka Deadwood Dick, Isom Dart, Ben Hodges and Rufus Buck were all notoriously famous and infamous cowboys whilst the strong and powerful stagecoach Mary bore little resemblance to Doris Day’s calamity Jane.
Hollywood may have overlooked their story, but we haven’t.

They Die by Dawn’ is a short film (54 minutes) based on the true life African-American cowboys of the old west. With an all star cast including golden globe winner Giancarlo Esposito, Boardwalk empire’s Michael K Williams, Greys Anatomy’s Jessie Williams, Grammy® award winning Erykah Badu and Hollywood a lister Rosario Dawson, the film sets out to tell the story of a fictionalized showdown between the real life characters.
