PHILLY NATIVE SARAH C. POINDEXTER RETURNS HOME TO SHARE HER FIRST HOLLYWOOD FEATURE FILM

PHILADELPHIA, PA - Three years ago, Philly native SARAH C. POINDEXTER headed to Los Angeles with a completed feature film, a handful of contacts and a goal of making films in Hollywood.  On Friday, August 21 at 7pm, Reelblack, Philly’s #1 promoter of African-American Film, is proud to host the Philadelphia Premiere and Homecoming of Sarah’s most recent project, “THE GREATEST SONG”.  This ONE NIGHT ONLY event will take place at the International House, 3701 Chestnut Street in University City.  Admission is $8 for Adults, $6 for Students, IHouse Members and Reelblack Season (6) Six Members.  Those who purchase a Reelblack Season (7) Seven Membership ($30) will be admitted FREE of charge.

Sarah, who has an MFA in film and media arts from Temple University, accomplished this goal with the help of her partners of ON THE REEL PRODUCTIONS.  They are a filmmaking team made up of her former students brothers MIKEY and ANDRE JONES and JUAN VELEZ. Sarah met Mikey and Andre as teenagers, after being hired by the Philadelphia Youth Network to transition them from students of film into instructors and professional filmmakers. Mikey and Andre first job as instructor was as a local Philadelphia after school program where they met and taught Juan, who was only 14 at the time.

On The Reel produced its first feature film in 2006 called “Soulful”. “Soulful”, is the story of a woman addicted to crack who sells the soul of her unborn child to the devil so that it may be born healthy.  The film was released to video in 2007 by Koch Entertainment.  They eventually paired up with writer-producer-star AIDA RODRIGUEZ to create this uplifting and inspiring romance with music.

FILM OVERVIEW:

A successful music producer (LAMMAN RUCKER of Tyler Perry’s Meet the Browns) thinks he’s got all the answers, but heaven help him when he meets a pretty church choir director (AIDA RODRIGUEZ). Sparks fly as the pair tries to save two imperiled churches of different ethnicities. Their only hope… is to help the choirs join together to win first prize in a National Gospel Competition. In order to reach their goal, the choirs have to overcome racial tensions and learn how to work together if they’re going to have a prayer of winning.

The Greatest Song was born directly out of a frustration Aida had over the lack of roles for Latina women, being of Puerto Rican and Dominican decent. “So instead of waiting for a great script, I just wrote one for myself” states Aida.    Sarah agreed to produce and direct the project, which was released earlier this month to DVD via Image Entertainment . “My first introduction to Aida was as an actress that I cast in a short film but quickly learned she is also a writer and producer. Both of us are battling the challenges of being women of color in Hollywood. It’s not easy but that’s not stopping us.”

After the ONE NIGHT ONLY premiere screening, copies of the film will be available for the audience to purchase.  Guests will also have the opportunity to meet several members of the cast and crew including  Writer and Actor -Aida Rodriguez,  Producer and Director –Sarah C. Poindexter, co-star-Cat Wilson. They will be on hand for a post film Q&A to share their insights as Black and Latina women who are making it in Hollywood.
